Ivan Gogun, a journalist with the Groznensky rabochy newspaper, was severely wounded during the fighting for the Chechen capital in August 1996. He was shot a short distance from the newspaper offices.
The exact date of his injury is unknown. Gogun was transferred to the hospital in Vladikavkaz (North Ossetia), where he died.
The oldest journalist with the newspaper, he often published under the pen name “Ivan Muratov”. The daily paper, founded in 1917, was the main Russian-language newspaper in Chechnya.
