[Update, April 2009]
53-year-old Yury Guselnikov, a journalist with the internet publication Bolshoi Novosibirsk, went missing in the Altai mountains in August 2008. He was travelling through the Ust-Koksinsky district and was due to return to the base camp with his spaniel on 12 August.
Guselnikov went on holiday in the Altai Republic on 30 July and for a time travelled with a group of hikers, visiting the area from Dagestan. Together they went to the village of Tyungur. The others returned from their horseback excursion; Guselnikov did not. Local witnesses suggest he continued to Mount Belukha. On 27 August it was announced that search parties from the Ministry of Emergency Situations had not been able to find any trace of him.
The law enforcement agencies continued their search.
UPDATE BY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE (April 2009)
In April 2009, in response to an enquiry from Alexei Simonov of the Glasnost Defence Foundation, the Prosecutor General’s Office said that there was no indication that a criminal act was responsible for the disappearance of Yury Guselnikov.
