On 23 February 2001 Leonid Grigoryev, editor with the Ural press inform agency, was killed in Chelyabinsk.
The death was reported to the police the next day by the man who later admitted to killing Grigoryev after they had been drinking together on Army day (23 February). It was not until his mother reported her son missing two weeks later that the murdered man was identified.
In the late 1980s Grigoryev and a group of like-minded journalists began broadcasting a live radio programme to the Chelyabinsk Region which was an unusual project for the time. Subsequently Grigoryev worked for a long while as press secretary to the mayor of Chelyabinsk.
