German photographer Harmut Schulz died on the night of 13-14 March in Kaliningrad.
He arrived in the city a few days earlier, rented an apartment for several months ahead and it was the maid he hired who found him dead on 16 March. The local prosecutor's office could not at first establish how he had died.
The Moscow daily Segodnya claimed that Schulz was found with his arms and hands tied. The prosecutor's office did not immediately instigate a criminal case. There were no visible signs of a violent death, said district prosecutor Vladimir Graf: nothing had been taken in the flat and Schulz's car was still parked outside the stairwell entrance.
