Alexei Khropov, director of the Vox radio station, was found dead in his car on the Leningrad Highway 19 kms from Moscow on 16 March 1995. He died from a shot to the head.
The radio station was set up in April 1993 and mainly broadcast popular and classical music and programmes about Russian culture. A year later it was facing financial difficulties and could only continue medium wave broadcasting in Moscow and in Krasnodar. It ceased broadcasting in February 1995 for technical reasons.
His colleagues excluded the suggestion of suicide. For a time two plainclothes policemen responsible for security in the Moscow Metro were held as suspects. Khropov’s Ford Taurus had crashed into their Moskvich and, they said, when they opened the door they found him dead.
