On the morning of 1 February 1994, Sergei Dubov, president of the Novoye vremya publishing house, was shot dead outside the stairwell of his apartment block in north Moscow as he was leaving for work.
One suggestion is that this was a contract killing possibly linked to his financial debts. His death, according to the Segodnya daily (7 July 1994), was the first in a series of killings in the struggle for control over the “still not privatised publishing and printing sector”.
Dubov was responsible not only for the political weekly Novoye vremya (The New Times) but in 1991 created the very popular Vsyo dlya vas newspaper for free adverts, creating an advertising agency and finally set up a publishing house of which he became president in 1992.
Although a large investigative team was set up, drawing on national and Moscow resources, the murder was not solved.
