On the evening of Friday, 8 February 2008 Yelena Shestakova, formerly a journalist with the Pyat uglov newspaper, was attacked in St Petersburg. Later found unconscious, she was taken to the Djaparadze neurological research institute for treatment but died from her wounds.
An 18-year-old first year student at the college of tourism and hotel service was subsequently arrested for this and the attempted murder of a security guard. He kept records of his crimes on his computer. Judged criminally insane, in February he was confined to a mental hospital.
