Vadim Obekhov, columnist with the major local "Vesti" newspaper, died in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Region Hospital on 10 August 1995. He had been severely beaten by unknown assailants near his home on 2 August.
Official investigators in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky are pursuing two lines of enquiry but refuse to say what they are. Certain sources indicate that articles Obekhov published on criminal subjects could be the reason for the attack or his commercial dealings in real estate.
