Edmund Yodkovsky, chief editor of the Literaturnye novosti weekly, died in hospital on the night of 12-13 May 1994 after being knocked down late in the evening by a car on a Moscow street near his home.
Road traffic police considered that the death of Yodkovsky, 61, was an accident that occurred when he crossed the street in the wrong place. His son insisted that a criminal investigation be opened, arguing that the driver, who did not stop (but was found within a week), could not have failed to notice the incident and an investigation began.
In 1992 Edmund Yodkovsky won a lengthy court case in 1992 for libel against Den, the chauvinist and anti-Semitic “newspaper of the spiritual opposition”, and subsequent threats led at first to suspicions that the accident had more to it.
