Yury Baldin, chief editor at the Focus-TV company in Chelyabinsk, was taken to hospital on 1 February 1997 with numerous head injuries and frostbitten hands. He lay in a coma for three days and then died.
On 31 January Baldin left work at 11 pm, drove home and after parking his car walked to his apartment block. He had no money on him and was sober when attacked.
On 24 December 1997 the Chelyabinsk Region prosecutor’s office said that the investigation into the death was proceeding but those responsible had not been identified.
