On 8 May 1996 the body of Nina Yefimova, a correspondent with the Grozny newspaper Vozrozhdenie, was found near the Oil College in the Leninsky district of Grozny. She and her 70-year old mother were abducted by unknown persons on the night of 7-8 May and both murdered.
Yefimova was born in Grozny in 1970 and entered the languages faculty of the Chechen-Ingush University in 1987. She became a journalist and wrote mainly about the problem of crime in Chechnya, joining the new government-backed Vozrozhdenie (Rebirth) newspaper after it was founded in 1995.
It is reported that Nina Yefimova was killed by a shot to the head. An investigation was opened and one cause of her murder was thought to be her articles on criminal issues.
