On 10 January 1995 Jochen Piest, correspondent for the German magazine Stern, and Vladimir Sorokin, a Rossiskaya Gazeta journalist, came under fire from Chechen fighters. They were near Chervlyonnaya railway station, 25 km north-east of Grozny, taking photographs of Russian sappers clearing mines from the railway. Jochen Piest was shot three times and fatally wounded.
