Alexander Zhadayev, a journalist with TV channel 11, was killed in Penza on 16 July 2007, on Monday night. The head of traffic police for the Penza Region, Vladimir Yegorov, said the fatality occurred when Zhadayev was filming the results of a car accident on Pobeda Prospect where a Gazel truck had collided with Volga and Zhiguli automobiles.
A VAZ automobile, travelling at high speed, failed to brake and hit the stationary ambulance, attending the victims of the crash. As a result, the ambulance was thrown onto the people standing behind, one of whom was Zhadayev. The cameraman was killed outright and the other casualty, a witness to the crash, was taken to hospital with concussion and a suspected fractured skull.
The driver of the VAZ, it was learned later, was a traffic policeman on his day off. He was at the wheel of his own car and witnesses said he was not sober. During the accident he received insignificant injuries and bruises.
