The body of Anatoly Tyutinkov, deputy director of the Vecherny Peterburg newspaper, was found by fishermen on 27 October 1996 on the banks of the Gulf of Finland not far from the Petersburg suburb of Lakhta. Forensic experts considered his body had been in the water for about 24 hours.
The local police department investigating the journalist’s death could find no signs of violence. Others recalled he had been intending to sail his yacht but it was still moored at the yacht club several kilometres from where his body was found. On 12 November 1996 Vladimir Gronsky, chief editor of Vecherny Peterburg, formally requested the prosecutor’s office to thoroughly investigate and decided whether to open a criminal case.
