The body of Shamkhan Kagirov, correspondent for the Vozrozhdenie newspaper (Grozny) and Rossiskaya gazeta, was found on 13 December 1995 some 20 kilometres from Grozny.
The police vehicle in which he and three policemen were travelling was ambushed by Chechen fighters and all were killed. According to Rossiskaya Gazeta they were on their way to a rural polling station on the eve of elections.
