Vladimir Ustinov, a proof-reader with the city’s printing works, was murdered in Ivanovo on 28 July 1998 in his own flat. He was struck over the head and then strangled.
Three months later his murderer, who had previous convictions for theft, confessed his responsibility to the police for this and a later murder. Ustinov was killed by an artist working for the local funeral home, whose work on Ustinov’s recently deceased mother’s gravestone he did not like. On 23 November 1999 his murderer was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony.
A well-known freelance journalist with several local newspapers, Ustinov had an education in law and wide interests. Aged 59 at the time of his death, he was disabled and led a solitary life.
