Lev Bogomolov, chief editor of the "Kaluga Vechernyaya" weekly, died in unconfirmed circumstances on the night of 28-29 October 1996. His body was found at the side of the highway with a severe head injury and many broken bones.
The Regional prosecutor’s office said that Bogomolov’s injuries were consistent with a road accident. An official investigation began. Journalists at Bogomolov’s newspaper announced that they would carry out their own investigation.
Lev Bogomolov had been chief editor of the weekly since 1991 and it had one of the highest print-runs in the Region. "Kaluga Vechernyaya" was noted for its controversial publications. Some suggested a link between the death and the coming gubernatorial elections, a suggestion that was officially repudiated.
